What is X16CrMo5-1?

X16CrMo5-1 (1.7366, A182 F5a) is a 5 % Cr–1 % Mo martensitic alloy steel from the EN heat-resistant Cr-Mo family, run at higher carbon than standard F5 for extra strength in hot service. Engineers specify it for forged valve internals, flanges and high-temperature bolting that must hold 500 MPa yield, 700 MPa tensile and 20 % elongation at about 210 HB (20 HRC) up to 600 °C; usual forms are bar, forgings and flanges in +A, +N, +NT and +QT. The matrix air-hardens, so weldability (45) and formability (30) are limited and post-weld heat treatment is mandatory. Corrosion resistance is oxidation-only (26); X11CrMo9-1 / A335 P9 is the usual step up when more chromium is needed. X16CrMo5-1 has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 93% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). X16CrMo5-1 has a yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — stronger than 63% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 213 GPa (30.9 Msi).

Working with X16CrMo5-1

Is X16CrMo5-1 easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed or N+T state with rigid setups, coated carbide and generous coolant; the air-hardening matrix work-hardens and burnishes if feeds are too light.

Can X16CrMo5-1 be welded?

Weld with matching 5Cr-0.5Mo (E8018-B6 / ER80S-B6) filler, 200–300 °C preheat and interpass, and mandatory 700–760 °C post-weld heat treatment to avoid hard, crack-prone HAZ.

Can X16CrMo5-1 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge at 1050–1150 °C and finish above 900 °C, then slow-cool or immediately anneal; cold forming is limited to gentle bends because the steel hardens on air cooling.
