What is 25CrMo4?

25CrMo4 (1.7218) is a quenched-and-tempered chromium-molybdenum steel to EN 10083, the European counterpart of AISI 4130 for moderately stressed machined and welded parts. Q&T bar gives 650 MPa yield, 870 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and 270 HB (28 HRC), and stock is available in +A, +N, +QT, +C, +CH, +H, +S and +AC conditions for bar and forgings. Weldability is good for an alloy steel (score 65) with low-hydrogen filler and preheat on heavier sections, but there is no inherent corrosion resistance and the strength ceiling sits below 34CrNiMo6/4340, which is the step up for heavier sections. 25CrMo4 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 25CrMo4 has a yield strength of 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 870 MPa (126 ksi) — stronger than 79% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).
