What is 38KhMYuA?
38KhMYuA is the CIS-standard chromium-molybdenum-aluminium nitriding steel, using roughly 1 % aluminium to form a high-hardness nitrided case on a quenched and tempered core; it is functionally equivalent to 38CrMoAlA and to European 41CrAlMo7-10. It is bought as hot-rolled, cold-drawn and Q&T bar for nitrided wear surfaces, with default values of 860 MPa yield, 1000 MPa tensile, 16 % elongation and 300 HB (30 HRC) and service to 500 °C. Weldability is poor and the steel rusts without a coating. Availability outside CIS supply chains is limited, so 41CrAlMo7-10 is the usual substitute. 38KhMYuA has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 95% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 38KhMYuA has a yield strength of 860 MPa (125 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) — stronger than 89% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 16% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 38KhMYuA
Is 38KhMYuA easy to machine?
Rough machine in the annealed state; finish machine after Q&T at 28–32 HRC with carbide tooling, then leave 0.05–0.10 mm grinding stock for post-nitriding finishing since the nitrided case is essentially unmachinable.
Can 38KhMYuA be welded?
Poor weldability — high hardenability plus ~1 % Al gives hard, crack-prone HAZ and oxide inclusions; if unavoidable use 250–350 °C preheat, low-hydrogen consumables and immediate stress relief/temper, and never weld a nitrided surface.
Can 38KhMYuA be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge at 1150–850 °C followed by slow cooling and annealing; cold forming is not practical above the annealed condition.
