What is 430?
430 (UNS S43000 / EN 1.4016 / GB 1Cr17) is the workhorse straight-chromium ferritic stainless steel, containing ~17 % Cr with no deliberate nickel addition, so it is ferromagnetic, cheaper and far less price-volatile than 304. It is chosen for decorative trim, appliance panels, kitchenware, heat-exchanger and furnace parts up to ~815 °C thanks to good atmospheric and oxidation resistance plus excellent polishability. Limits are modest chloride/pitting resistance, poor deep-drawability compared with austenitics (ridging/roping), a room-temperature-to-sub-zero ductile-to-brittle transition, and welds that coarsen and embrittle unless the section is thin or post-weld annealed. 430 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 430 has a yield strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 63% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 430
Is 430 easy to machine?
Machines more freely than 304 (≈54 % of 1212) with less gumming; use sharp carbide, positive rake, rigid setups and flood coolant — for heavy turning specify free-machining 430F instead.
Can 430 be welded?
Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/resistance in thin gauges; keep heat input low, avoid preheat above ~200 °C, use 430/309L filler and post-weld anneal 760–815 °C on thicker sections to restore ductility.
Can 430 be formed, bent or molded?
Good for bending, roll forming and shallow drawing; springback and ridging (roping) are higher than 304 and severe deep draws should be redirected to 304 or a stabilised ferritic (439/441).
