1.4508 is supplied in 4 conditions, soft to hard. ST is the default FabDigit quotes; the values on this page are for it.
Compare all 4 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
As-welded deposit | Condition of a low-carbon N-alloyed casting after production weld repair; usable without re-annealing because C ≤0.03 % prevents sensitisation, but ferrite/sigma control and NDT are required. | 285 | 520 | 32 | 180 HB | 2.2 % IACS |
STDefault Solution annealed | The only standard supply condition for this grade; maximises corrosion resistance and toughness by dissolving carbides and sigma-forming phases. | 290 | 540 | 40 | 165 HB | 2.2 % IACS |
Hot isostatically pressed then solution annealed | Choose for pressure-retaining or fatigue-critical castings where shrinkage microporosity must be closed; gives higher ductility, toughness and fatigue life. | 300 | 560 | 48 | 165 HB | 2.2 % IACS |
Centrifugally cast, solution annealed | Pick for tubes, sleeves and rings: the dense, directionally solidified wall gives slightly higher strength and better soundness than static sand casting. | 310 | 570 | 38 | 170 HB | 2.2 % IACS |
What is 1.4508?
1.4508 (GX2CrNiMoN19-11-3, CG3M, J92999) is a nitrogen-alloyed, low-carbon 19Cr-11Ni-3Mo cast stainless steel — the casting counterpart of the 316LN wrought grade. Nitrogen raises strength over standard cast 316-type grades while carbon at or below 0.03% keeps welds free of sensitization; it is supplied as sand, investment and centrifugal castings in ST, ST+HIP, CENT-ST and as-welded conditions. Solution-treated properties are 290 MPa yield, 540 MPa tensile, 40% elongation and 165 HB, with service to 550 °C. Chloride resistance (score 68) is moderate; step up to a cast duplex such as 1.4517 for seawater or acid duty. 1.4508 has a density of 7.95 g/cm³ (0.287 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4508 has a yield strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — weaker than 72% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 195 GPa (28.3 Msi).

Working with 1.4508
Is 1.4508 easy to machine?
Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy feed to stay under the hardened skin, and flood coolant; expect ~40 % of AISI 1212.
Can 1.4508 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/SMAW/FCAW with 316L or 316LN filler (E316LN/ER316LNi); no post-weld anneal needed thanks to ≤0.03 % C, keep interpass <150 °C and heat input low to limit sigma phase.
Can 1.4508 be formed, bent or molded?
Supplied as sand, investment or centrifugal castings; wide freezing range demands good risering and chills, and nitrogen levels must be held to avoid gas porosity.
1.4508 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on 1.4508?
Pickle and passivate (ASTM A967) or electropolish after machining; shot blasting alone leaves an iron-contaminated surface that rusts.
