What is 1.4713?

1.4713 (X10CrAlSi7) is a low-chromium Fe-Cr-Al-Si heat-resisting ferritic steel with about 7% Cr, giving moderate scaling resistance up to roughly 800 °C at the lowest cost in the heat-resisting family. It is used for burner and furnace hardware where oxidation resistance in dry heat matters more than strength, and is available annealed (+A), as-rolled (+AR), cold-drawn (+C) and as 2B sheet. Typical values are 260 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 22% elongation and 165 HB (84 HRB). Aqueous corrosion resistance is poor (score 32) and weldability is limited (score 45), requiring preheat and post-weld annealing; step up to 1.4724 at 13% Cr or 1.4736 for higher temperatures. 1.4713 has a density of 7.6 g/cm³ (0.275 lb/in³), lighter than 98% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). 1.4713 has a yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 84% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 1.4713

Is 1.4713 easy to machine?

Machine as a ferritic stainless: moderate speed, high feed, sharp cutting edges and ample coolant. The aluminium content promotes adhesion to the tool, so use coated carbide and avoid very light depths of cut that leave a work-hardened layer.

Can 1.4713 be welded?

Weldable with TIG, MAG and covered electrodes using matching or higher-alloy filler such as 1.4829/309. Preheat heavy sections to 150–300 °C, control interpass temperature and anneal at 760–800 °C after welding to restore toughness; HAZ grain growth is pronounced.

Can 1.4713 be formed, bent or molded?

Thin sheet can be cold bent and pressed, but ductility is lower than austenitic steel — keep bend radii at 1.5t or greater. For heavy forming, work hot at 700–900 °C and anneal with slow cooling.

What surface finishes work on 1.4713?

Not anodizable. Pickle and passivate, or use the high-temperature pre-oxidized film as supplied; aluminizing or heat-resistant coatings can be added where extra corrosion or carburization resistance is needed. Polishability is moderate.
