Working with 1.4742

Is 1.4742 easy to machine?

Machines like 430/446 — gummy and work-hardening; use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setup, ~60–90 m/min, heavy feed and flood coolant to avoid rubbing.

Can 1.4742 be welded?

TIG/MIG weldable with austenitic 309/310 or Ni-base filler; preheat 150–250 °C, keep heat input low and post-weld anneal 800 °C where possible — weld metal and HAZ coarsen and lose toughness.

Can 1.4742 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form with generous bend radii (≥2t) and avoid sharp re-strikes; warm forming 200–300 °C improves ductility; hot work 1100–800 °C then slow-cool/anneal.

What surface finishes work on 1.4742?

Not anodisable; pre-oxidise at service temperature to build the alumina scale, or use silicone/aluminium high-temperature paint; pickle in HNO₃-HF after hot work, abrasive finishes are fine but avoid carbon-steel contamination.
