What is 1.4002?
1.4002 (X6CrAl13, UNS S40500, AISI 405) is an aluminium-stabilized 13Cr ferritic stainless steel in which the Al addition suppresses air-hardening martensite in the heat-affected zone, making it the weld-friendly member of the 13Cr family. It is chosen for welded pressure equipment and furnace hardware and is supplied as annealed plate (1D), cold-rolled sheet (2B, 2R), cold-drawn (CD) and stress-relieved (SR) bar, with typical properties of 230 MPa yield, 460 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation, 150 HB and service to 700 °C. Corrosion resistance is limited to mild environments and formability (score 60) is modest, so use 1.4016/430 for appearance-critical or more corrosive work and 1.4003 for structural plate. 1.4002 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). 1.4002 has a yield strength of 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) — weaker than 99% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4002
Is 1.4002 easy to machine?
Machines like annealed 410 but gummier — use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setups, 60–100 m/min, generous coolant, and avoid dwelling to prevent work-hardened skin.
Can 1.4002 be welded?
Best-in-class among 13Cr grades: Al stabilization prevents HAZ martensite so preheat is often unnecessary; use 405/430 or austenitic 309L/308L filler, low heat input, and PWHT at 730–790 °C on heavy sections to limit grain-coarsening embrittlement.
Can 1.4002 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold form in the annealed condition with generous bend radii (≥1.5t) and allowance for ~15–20 % springback; hot work at 800–1050 °C then anneal, and avoid holding at 400–550 °C (475 °C embrittlement).
