What is 1.4017?
1.4017 (X6CrNi17-1) is a nickel-modified 17Cr ferritic stainless steel that offers higher toughness and slightly better corrosion resistance than plain 430, and is used for European decorative and mild-corrosion parts. Typical annealed properties are 300 MPa yield, 500 MPa tensile, 25 % elongation and 160 HB, with service to 750 °C, in annealed hot- and cold-rolled sheet, bright-annealed, cold-drawn, 1/4H and 1/2H conditions. Formability is good for the family (score 68) but corrosion resistance is still low (score 40), so it is not for chloride or marine service. Use 1.4016/430 where cost governs, or an austenitic grade where corrosion resistance drives the choice. 1.4017 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 1.4017 has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 68% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 220 GPa (31.9 Msi).

Working with 1.4017
Is 1.4017 easy to machine?
Machines more easily than austenitic 304 — use sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed and rigid setup to avoid built-up edge; chips are stringy, so use chipbreakers and generous coolant.
Can 1.4017 be welded?
Weldable by TIG/MIG/resistance with low heat input and no preheat above ~150 °C; HAZ grain coarsening reduces toughness, so use 309L or 430Nb filler and avoid multi-pass buildup on thick sections.
Can 1.4017 be formed, bent or molded?
Good deep drawing and bending in the annealed condition (better n and toughness than plain 430); avoid severe stretch forming and allow larger bend radii across the rolling direction; roping/ridging can appear on heavily drawn panels.
1.4017 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| C | ≤ 0.08 | 0.05 |
| Si | ≤ 1 | 0.5 |
| Mn | ≤ 1 | 0.5 |
| P | ≤ 0.04 | 0.03 |
| S | ≤ 0.02 | 0.01 |
| Cr | 16 – 18 | 17 |
| NiNi addition distinguishes 1.4017 from 1.4016; some mill specs quote 1.2–1.6 | 1 – 1.5 | 1.2 |

What surface finishes work on 1.4017?
Not anodizable; passivate in nitric acid after fabrication, and use bright-annealed or buffed/electropolished surfaces for decorative work — PVD coloring and clear lacquer are common.
