What is S43037?

S43037 (Type 439) is a Ti/Nb-stabilized 17 % Cr ferritic stainless, a stabilized development of 430 in which the interstitials are tied up so the heat-affected zone stays ductile and free of sensitization. Sheet in 2B, 2D and BA finishes, hot-rolled annealed and pickled plate, temper-rolled and 1/4H strip, cold-drawn bar and welded tube are used where weldability (82) and formability (78) matter, with service to 815 °C. Default properties are 285 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and 150 HB (80 HRB). It is not hardenable, chloride pitting resistance is below 304/316, and heavy strain combined with long high-temperature exposure coarsens the grain. S43037 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). S43037 has a yield strength of 285 MPa (41.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 74% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S43037

Is S43037 easy to machine?

Machinability is slightly better than 304 but the chips still smear onto the tool: use sharp positive-rake tooling, high feed and plenty of emulsion coolant, and control depth of cut to limit the work-hardened layer and burr formation.

Can S43037 be welded?

GTAW, GMAW, laser and high-frequency welding all work, and the Ti/Nb stabilization means no post-weld anneal is needed in the as-welded condition. Use low heat input with 409Nb/439 or 308L/430LNb type filler, pure argon shielding, and avoid nitrogen-bearing gases that cause coarse-grain embrittlement of the weld.

Can S43037 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bending, roll forming and stretch forming are good (high r-value), but allow for anisotropy and ridging/roping on drawn surfaces. Keep bend radius ≥1t and avoid heavy deformation followed by long high-temperature exposure, which coarsens the grain.

What surface finishes work on S43037?

2B and BA rolled finishes, mechanical polishing, electropolishing and passivation all apply. The grade cannot be anodized; use chemical coloring or PVD for decorative shades, and always passivate after pickling to restore the passive film.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on stainless steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).
