What is S40910?
S40910 is a titanium- and niobium-stabilized 11% Cr ferritic stainless steel in the Type 409 family, with the stabilizer balance tuned to protect the weld zone from corrosion attack. Annealed sheet, strip and welded tube deliver 270 MPa yield, 440 MPa tensile, 31% elongation and 150 HB (78 HRB), with a formability score of 75 for drawn and roll-formed exhaust shells. Oxidation limits continuous service to about 675 °C, wet chloride exposure produces cosmetic surface rusting, and polished finishes stay dull because of the coarse ferritic grain. S40920 is the closely related Ti-only variant. S40910 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). S40910 has a yield strength of 270 MPa (39.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) — weaker than 79% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 31% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S40910
Is S40910 easy to machine?
Machines like a soft low-alloy steel but is gummy: use sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds, rigid setups and flood coolant to avoid built-up edge; ~65 % of AISI 1212.
Can S40910 be welded?
Excellent for GTAW/GMAW/laser/resistance welding thanks to Ti(+Nb) stabilization — no PWHT needed; limit heat input and use Ar or Ar+He (no nitrogen) to curb grain coarsening, and match with 409Nb/439 filler or 308L/309L for dissimilar joints.
Can S40910 be formed, bent or molded?
Good deep-drawing and roll-forming behaviour in the annealed condition (r-value favours stretch-draw exhaust shells); watch ridging/roping on drawn surfaces and allow slightly larger bend radii than 304.

What surface finishes work on S40910?
Not anodizable; use pickling/passivation, aluminized or Al-Si coating, or high-temperature silicone paint for cosmetic/wet-corrosion service; mechanical polishing gives only a modest luster because of coarse ferritic grain.
