What is 1.4736?
1.4736 (X3CrAlTi18-2, UNS S44735, 18SR) is a titanium-stabilized 18% Cr ferritic stainless with an aluminium addition that forms an alumina-type scale, giving oxidation and thermal-fatigue resistance to 1050 °C. Engineers use it for the hottest sections of welded exhaust systems and furnace ducting as a nickel-free alternative to austenitic heat-resisting grades, in annealed and hot-rolled pickled sheet, bright-annealed strip, 1/4-hard cold-rolled coil and as-welded tube. Typical values are 320 MPa yield, 510 MPa tensile, 28% elongation and 170 HB (85 HRB). Machinability (48) and formability (62) are below austenitics and HAZ toughness is low; 1.4634 is the lower-cost step down. 1.4736 has a density of 7.45 g/cm³ (0.269 lb/in³), lighter than 100% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). 1.4736 has a yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 510 MPa (74 ksi) — weaker than 60% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4736
Is 1.4736 easy to machine?
Machines like a soft ferritic stainless — use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setups, generous feed and coolant to avoid the gummy built-up edge caused by Ti carbonitrides.
Can 1.4736 be welded?
Readily GTAW/laser/resistance welded thanks to Ti stabilization; keep heat input low, avoid preheat above ~150 °C, and use 430Ti/439 or 309L filler — expect HAZ grain coarsening and reduced RT toughness.
Can 1.4736 be formed, bent or molded?
Good cold bending, roll-forming and moderate deep drawing in the annealed condition; springback is lower than austenitics but total elongation and stretch-forming limits are noticeably tighter than 304.

What surface finishes work on 1.4736?
Pickle and passivate after hot work; the alumina-forming surface is inherently scale-resistant, so no coating is normally required — avoid aluminizing on top and never anodize.
