What is 436?

436 is a niobium-stabilized, molybdenum-bearing 17% Cr ferritic stainless (S43600, 1.4526, X6CrMoNb17-1, SUS436/436L). The Nb stabilization limits sensitization in the weld zone while Mo raises pitting resistance, so it is used for welded and deep-drawn sheet and strip supplied annealed, temper rolled, 1/4-hard, 1/2-hard or cold drawn; the default condition gives 365 MPa yield, 530 MPa tensile, 30% elongation and 175 HB with service to 815 °C. Formability (score 72) and stretch-formability remain below austenitic 304, and springback is higher. Use 434 when weld-zone stability is not required, or 439 for titanium-stabilized tubing. 436 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 436 has a yield strength of 365 MPa (52.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 530 MPa (76.9 ksi) — weaker than 51% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 436

Is 436 easy to machine?

Machines like 430/434 — gummy, work-hardens lightly; use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setup, generous coolant and ~55% of 1212 speeds.

Can 436 be welded?

Nb stabilisation limits sensitisation, so GTAW/GMAW/resistance welding of thin gauge is practical; keep heat input low to avoid HAZ grain coarsening and use 430Nb/309L filler when strength/ductility is critical.

Can 436 be formed, bent or molded?

Very good deep-drawability with low ridging/roping thanks to Nb; springback higher and stretch-formability lower than austenitic 304, so allow larger bend radii.

Manufacturability

The process limits FabDigit applies to 436. Every 436 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
