What is 1.4511?
1.4511 (X3CrNb17, supplied to the 439 designation) is a niobium-stabilized 17 % Cr ferritic stainless in which Nb ties up carbon and nitrogen so the weld zone keeps its corrosion resistance and ductility. It is available as annealed, 2R, 1D, cold-drawn and temper-rolled sheet, strip and welded tube, with 300 MPa yield, 470 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and service to 815 °C. It contains no molybdenum, so chloride pitting resistance is below 316, and its lower n-value limits heavy stretch forming. Titanium-stabilized ferritics are the nearest alternative. 1.4511 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). 1.4511 has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) — weaker than 68% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 220 GPa (31.9 Msi).

Working with 1.4511
Is 1.4511 easy to machine?
Machines like 430 (~55 % of 1212): use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setup, generous coolant and avoid dwelling to prevent work-hardened glaze; free-machining versions are not available.
Can 1.4511 be welded?
Excellent as-welded corrosion resistance thanks to Nb stabilization — GTAW/GMAW/laser with 430Nb/309L filler or autogenous; keep heat input low to limit grain coarsening and weld-metal embrittlement.
Can 1.4511 be formed, bent or molded?
Good deep-drawing and roll-forming behaviour with low springback versus austenitics; use larger bend radii than 304 and avoid heavy stretch forming due to lower n-value.
