What is 1.4607?

1.4607 (X2CrNbTi20) is a niobium- and titanium dual-stabilized 20% Cr ferritic stainless steel that offers better high-temperature oxidation resistance and weldability than standard 18% Cr stabilized grades. Engineers specify it for hot exhaust and furnace hardware, using 2B, 2D and 2R cold-rolled sheet, 1D hot-rolled material, annealed bar, annealed tube and skin-passed strip at 310 MPa yield, 490 MPa tensile, 28% elongation and 165 HB (84 HRB), with service to 950 °C. Ferritic r-values limit deep drawing and machinability is moderate (score 45); where 950 °C oxidation resistance is not needed, 18% Cr stabilized 441-type sheet is cheaper. 1.4607 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). 1.4607 has a yield strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and a tensile strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) — weaker than 63% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 220 GPa (31.9 Msi).

Working with 1.4607

Is 1.4607 easy to machine?

Machines like 430/441 — gummy but low work hardening; use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setup, generous coolant and moderate speeds with heavy feeds to break chips.

Can 1.4607 be welded?

Excellent — Nb+Ti stabilization prevents HAZ sensitization and limits grain growth; TIG/MIG/laser with Ar (+He), low heat input, matching stabilized or 309L/430Nb filler, no post-weld anneal required.

Can 1.4607 be formed, bent or molded?

Good roll forming, bending and moderate deep drawing; lower r-value and elongation than austenitics, so allow larger bend radii, avoid severe stretch forming and beware of ridging/roping on drawn faces.

What surface finishes work on 1.4607?

Pickle and passivate after hot work; brushed, 2B or BA finishes take well and it can be electropolished, but it is not anodizable and should be kept free of embedded carbon-steel particles.
