What is S44627?

S44627 (XM-27, E-Brite) is a high-purity 26Cr-1Mo super-ferritic stainless steel with extremely low interstitials, available as annealed plate, sheet and bar, cold-drawn and cold-rolled product, and welded tube. Engineers select it for excellent resistance to chloride pitting and stress-corrosion cracking and for weldability without sensitization, at 345 MPa yield, 490 MPa tensile and 30 % elongation. Limits are a ductile-to-brittle transition near room temperature in heavier gauges, sensitivity to carbon, nitrogen and oxygen pickup when welding, and a 315 °C service ceiling. S44660 is the usual alternative for thicker sections. S44627 has a density of 7.67 g/cm³ (0.277 lb/in³), lighter than 95% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). S44627 has a yield strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi) and a tensile strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) — weaker than 54% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S44627

Is S44627 easy to machine?

Machines like 26Cr ferritic stainless — gummy and abrasive at ~50 % of 1212; use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy feeds and flood coolant to avoid work hardening.

Can S44627 be welded?

Autogenous GTAW or matching high-purity filler with ultra-clean argon (backing gas mandatory); any carbon, nitrogen or oxygen pickup destroys weld ductility and corrosion resistance — keep heat input low and interpass cool.

Can S44627 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms and deep draws reasonably in thin gauge; avoid tight bends in heavy plate and warm-form (150–250 °C) thick sections because of the near-room-temperature ductile-brittle transition.
