What is S40920?

S40920 is a titanium-stabilized 11–12% Cr ferritic stainless steel in the Type 409 family, positioned for maximum formability in welded exhaust hardware. Annealed material gives 250 MPa yield, 440 MPa tensile, 32% elongation and 140 HB (76 HRB) with a formability score of 78, and is supplied as 2B and 2D sheet, hot-rolled annealed plate, cold-worked strip and as-welded tube. Continuous service tops out near 675 °C and wet corrosion resistance suits only surface-rusting duty, so it is not a substitute for 304 on appearance parts; S40910 is the near-equivalent Ti+Nb stabilized alternative. S40920 has a density of 7.75 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 65% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). S40920 has a yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) — weaker than 91% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 32% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S40920

Is S40920 easy to machine?

Cuts more freely than austenitic stainless but is still gummy: use sharp positive-rake tooling, a large depth of cut with light feed and ample coolant, and plan for deburring.

Can S40920 be welded?

Titanium stabilization allows TIG, MIG, laser and resistance welding with no post-weld anneal. Control heat input to limit HAZ grain growth; suitable fillers are 409Nb or 430Ti, or 308L for dissimilar joints.

Can S40920 be formed, bent or molded?

Deep drawing, flanging and tube bending are good in the annealed condition and springback is lower than for austenitic grades; avoid excessive local thinning and keep bend radii ≥1t.

What surface finishes work on S40920?

Usually pickled and passivated, blasted, or used bare on exhaust parts. Aluminizing or high-temperature paint improves oxidation resistance; the alloy cannot be anodized.
