What is 1.4016?

1.4016 (X6Cr17, UNS S43000, AISI 430, SUS430) is the standard 17 % Cr general-purpose ferritic stainless steel and the European workhorse for appliance, trim and kitchenware sheet. Typical annealed values are 320 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and 155 HB, in 2B, 2D and 2R/BA cold-rolled sheet, 1D hot-rolled plate, +A and +C bar and 1/4H, 1/2H and full-hard tempers. Formability is limited (score 60): bending and roll forming are fine but deep-drawn parts and severe stretch forming usually move to 304 or a stabilized ferritic such as 1.4510/1.4509. Chloride exposure requires a coating or a higher-alloy grade. 1.4016 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 1.4016 has a yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 60% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 220 GPa (31.9 Msi).

Working with 1.4016

Is 1.4016 easy to machine?

Machines better than 304 with less gumminess; use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed and generous coolant — choose 430F if heavy automatic turning is needed.

Can 1.4016 be welded?

Weldable by TIG/MIG/resistance methods but the HAZ coarsens and embrittles; keep heat input low, avoid preheat above ~200 °C, use 309L/430 filler and post-weld anneal (~760–815 °C) for critical ductility.

Can 1.4016 be formed, bent or molded?

Good for bending, roll forming and shallow drawing; limited stretch-formability and susceptibility to ridging/roping means deep-drawn parts usually go to 304 or a stabilized ferritic (1.4510/1.4509).
