What is 1.4710?

1.4710 (GX30CrSi7) is a 7% Cr silicon-alloyed cast ferritic steel supplied as-cast (AC), annealed (A) or stress relieved (SR). It gives 290 MPa yield, 520 MPa tensile, 6% elongation and about 205 HB with service to 850 °C, and the high silicon content provides the fluidity needed for thin-wall exhaust manifolds and turbocharger housings. Corrosion resistance is low (rated 30) — 7% Cr will not prevent rusting in wet service — and machinability is limited (40). Where higher oxidation and corrosion resistance is required, 1.4729 (13Cr-Si) is the next grade up. 1.4710 has a density of 7.65 g/cm³ (0.276 lb/in³), lighter than 96% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). 1.4710 has a yield strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 72% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 6% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with 1.4710

Is 1.4710 easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed condition with rigid setups, carbide inserts and moderate speeds; Cr carbides and cast skin are abrasive and work-harden the surface.

Can 1.4710 be welded?

Weldable for repair with matching Cr-Si or austenitic (309/312) filler; preheat 200–300 °C, hold interpass temperature and stress relieve/anneal after welding to avoid hard-zone cracking.

Can 1.4710 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied only as sand or shell castings — good fluidity from the high silicon allows thin-wall manifolds; no cold forming, keep sections uniform to limit hot tearing.

What surface finishes work on 1.4710?

Shot blast the oxide skin; protect wet-service faces with high-temperature aluminium/silicone paint, aluminising or ceramic coating since the 7% Cr level will not prevent rusting.

What is the yield strength of 1.4710?

1.4710 has a typical yield strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 72% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is 1.4710 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, better than 72% of stainless steel grades). Machine in the annealed condition with rigid setups, carbide inserts and moderate speeds; Cr carbides and cast skin are abrasive and work-harden the surface.

Can 1.4710 be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (30/100). Weldable for repair with matching Cr-Si or austenitic (309/312) filler; preheat 200–300 °C, hold interpass temperature and stress relieve/anneal after welding to avoid hard-zone cracking.
