Stainless Steel 410S
AISI/SAE 410S · UNS S41008 · EN 1.4000 · JIS SUS410S
410S is a low-carbon version of Type 410 (UNS S41008, 1.4000, SUS410S) in which the reduced carbon keeps the structure ferrite-dominant and effectively non-hardening on cooling, so welds and heat-affected zones stay ductile.

What is 410S?
410S is a low-carbon version of Type 410 (UNS S41008, 1.4000, SUS410S) in which the reduced carbon keeps the structure ferrite-dominant and effectively non-hardening on cooling, so welds and heat-affected zones stay ductile. Annealed material gives 265 MPa yield, 460 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and 150 HB (80 HRB) with service to 700 °C, available as HRAP plate, cold-rolled 2B and BA sheet and cold-drawn bar. It cannot be strengthened by hardening, resists only mild atmospheres and fresh water and rusts in chlorides; use 410 when hardness is required or 409 for stabilized exhaust-type service. 410S has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). 410S has a yield strength of 265 MPa (38.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) — weaker than 81% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 410S
Is 410S easy to machine?
Machines like a soft 12Cr stainless (~60 % of 1212): use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed with heavy flood coolant to avoid gumming and work-hardened skins.
Can 410S be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 309L or matching filler; 150–250 °C preheat plus 700–760 °C post-weld anneal is recommended on thick sections to restore HAZ ductility.
Can 410S be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms and roll-bends adequately but with higher springback and less stretch than 304; allow generous bend radii and avoid severe deep drawing.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to 410S. Every 410S part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
