1.4523 is supplied in 5 conditions, soft to hard. +A is the default FabDigit quotes; the values on this page are for it.
Compare all 5 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Hot rolled | Large-diameter bar (>~30 mm) where cold drawing is impractical; same mechanicals as +A with a machined surface. | 330 | 490 | 21 | 170 HB | 2.9 % IACS |
+ADefault Annealed | Standard stock condition for hot-rolled/forged bar destined for heavy machining or subsequent cold forming. | 340 | 500 | 20 | 175 HB | — |
Lightly cold drawn / soft-drawn | Compromise bar condition: better surface and straightness than +A but keeps most of the annealed ductility for cold heading. | 420 | 560 | 16 | 10 HRC | 2.9 % IACS |
Cold drawn, ground and polished | Use where the as-supplied OD becomes a functional/sealing surface (shafts, valve stems, h7/h8 tolerance). | 520 | 640 | 11 | 16 HRC | 2.9 % IACS |
Cold drawn | Pick for automatic-lathe (Swiss) bar stock needing tight tolerance, straightness and higher strength; ductility drops sharply. | 530 | 650 | 10 | 215 HB | — |
What is 1.4523?
1.4523 (X2CrMoTiS18-2) is a sulfur-bearing, free-machining variant of the titanium-stabilized 18Cr-2Mo ferritic stainless family, supplied mainly as bar in +A, +AR, +C, +C+SL and +LC conditions. Shops select it for high-volume turning and light cold heading: annealed values are about 340 MPa yield, 500 MPa tensile, 20% elongation and 175 HB, with a machinability score of 75 and chip behaviour near 75–85% of AISI 1212. The sulfide inclusions reduce corrosion resistance (score 55) and rule out structural welding, and service is limited to 400 °C; use 1.4521 (444) where welded joints or full chloride resistance are required. 1.4523 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 1.4523 has a yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 55% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 220 GPa (31.9 Msi).

Working with 1.4523
Is 1.4523 easy to machine?
Excellent for high-volume turning: sulfide inclusions give short chips at 75–85 % of AISI 1212; use sharp positive-rake carbide, high feed, ample coolant and avoid dwelling to prevent work-hardened glazing.
Can 1.4523 be welded?
Not recommended for structural welds — sulfur promotes hot cracking and destroys the passive film in the HAZ; if unavoidable, use low heat input GTAW with 316L/309L-type filler or restrict to resistance/projection welding.
Can 1.4523 be formed, bent or molded?
Ferritic with sulfide stringers: mild bending and cold heading are possible in the annealed condition (min bend radius ≥2t) but deep drawing, flaring and heavy upsetting risk longitudinal splitting.
