What is P460ML1?

P460ML1 (1.8837) is a thermomechanically rolled fine-grain pressure vessel steel listed with EN 10028-6, offering L1-level low-temperature impact toughness. It is chosen for cold-service pressure equipment where the 460 MPa yield class reduces wall thickness while keeping weldability high (CEV ≤ 0.47); plate is supplied in TM, TM+SR and through-thickness tested TM-Z35 conditions across 16–100 mm. Default values are 505 MPa yield, 615 MPa tensile, 23 % elongation and about 185 HB. The TM condition is lost by normalizing or hot forming above about 580 °C, so for thick or hot-formed parts use quenched and tempered P460QL2. P460ML1 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,490°C (2,714 °F). P460ML1 has a yield strength of 505 MPa (73.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 615 MPa (89.2 ksi) — stronger than 64% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 23% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P460ML1

Is P460ML1 easy to machine?

Machines like a 600 MPa HSLA plate — use rigid setups, coated carbide at moderate speeds; drilling and edge planing are routine but expect more tool load than S355.

Can P460ML1 be welded?

Excellent weldability at CEV ≤ 0.47; use low-hydrogen consumables matching 460 MPa yield, control heat input (typ. 1.0–2.5 kJ/mm) to protect the TMCP HAZ toughness, and minimise/avoid unnecessary PWHT.

Can P460ML1 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forming and roll bending are good (min. bend radius ~2t transverse); hot forming above about 580 °C destroys the TMCP condition, so any hot work must be followed by requalification or an agreed heat treatment.

What surface finishes work on P460ML1?

No anodizing; protect by shot blasting plus epoxy/PU coating, metallizing or hot-dip galvanizing — the bare surface rusts as fast as ordinary carbon steel.
