What is A182 F22V?
ASTM A182 F22V is a vanadium-modified 2.25Cr-1Mo forging steel (UNS K31835) developed for hydrogen-service reactor and heavy-wall vessel forgings, supplied quenched and tempered with simulated PWHT or step-cooling options. It offers higher creep-rupture strength than standard F22 at 480 MPa yield, 655 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation and about 205 HB (94 HRB), with a listed service ceiling of 482 °C. The trade-offs are long, tightly controlled heat-treatment and PWHT cycles, mandatory hydrogen control in welding, and no inherent corrosion resistance — the process side is normally clad. Standard F22 is the simpler alternative where creep strength allows. A182 F22V has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). A182 F22V has a yield strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) — stronger than 59% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with A182 F22V
Is A182 F22V easy to machine?
Machines like a 200 HB Q&T Cr-Mo steel — rigid setups, coated carbide at ~90–130 m/min, positive rake and generous coolant; V/Nb carbides give moderate tool wear.
Can A182 F22V be welded?
SAW/SMAW with matching 2.25Cr-1Mo-V consumables, 200–250 °C preheat and interpass, strict hydrogen control, dehydrogenation soak, and 690–705 °C PWHT (long cumulative times must be simulated on test coupons).
Can A182 F22V be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge at roughly 1200 → 950 °C with adequate reduction, then re-austenitize ~940–970 °C, liquid quench and temper ≥677 °C; cold forming is impractical.
