What is 20CrMo4?
20CrMo4 (1.3567; AISI 4118, JIS SCM420) is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum case-hardening steel of the EN 10084 family that develops a hard, wear-resistant case over a tough core after carburizing. It is stocked as bar, tube and forging stock in annealed, ferrite-pearlite, treated-for-machining and spheroidized conditions; the soft default values are 360 MPa yield, 570 MPa tensile, 22% elongation and 170 HB (87 HRB), with service to 400 °C. Hardenability is limited in heavy sections, welding needs preheat and PWHT, and there is no corrosion resistance. For larger gears use 20MnCrMo4-2 or 20NiCrMo7. 20CrMo4 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 20CrMo4 has a yield strength of 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) — weaker than 72% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 20CrMo4
Is 20CrMo4 easy to machine?
Machine in +A/+FP/+TH before carburizing — carbide inserts, 120–180 m/min turning; after case hardening only grinding, EDM or CBN turning is practical.
Can 20CrMo4 be welded?
Weldable with low-hydrogen consumables at CE ≈ 0.55: preheat 150–250 °C and PWHT at 600–650 °C; never weld carburized surfaces.
Can 20CrMo4 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold heading and extrusion are routine in the +AC/+S spheroidized conditions; hot forge 1150–850 °C followed by normalizing to refine grain.

What surface finishes work on 20CrMo4?
No anodizing — use Mn/Zn phosphating, black oxide, zinc or Zn-Ni plating (bake to avoid hydrogen embrittlement above 1000 MPa); shot peening after grinding boosts gear-root fatigue life.
