What is 12CrMo4?
12CrMo4 (1.7201) is a low-carbon chromium-molybdenum creep-resistant steel for pressure equipment; normalized, it gives about 340 MPa yield, 500 MPa tensile, 24 % elongation and 150 HB, with service to about 530 °C. Engineers select it for boiler and piping components because the low carbon keeps it readily weldable (weldability score 70) while Cr-Mo provides moderate elevated-temperature strength; typical forms are seamless tube, forged flanges and fittings, plate and bar. It is not stainless and needs coating for ambient corrosion protection; 13CrMo4-5 is the nearest alternative when higher creep strength is required. 12CrMo4 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). 12CrMo4 has a yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 76% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).
