What is A182 F11 Cl.2?

ASTM A182 F11 Cl.2 is the higher-strength class of the 1.25Cr-0.5Mo creep-resisting forging steel (UNS K11572), same chemistry as Cl.1 and A335 P11 but supplied normalized and tempered to 350 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and about 163 HB. It is used for higher-stress high-temperature forgings such as steam flanges, boiler components and valve bodies up to 550 °C. Machinability drops to about 55, and welding demands preheat, interpass control and PWHT. Choose Cl.1 where lower strength and easier machining are acceptable. A182 F11 Cl.2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). A182 F11 Cl.2 has a yield strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 74% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with A182 F11 Cl.2

Is A182 F11 Cl.2 easy to machine?

Machines like normalized 4130/4140 at ~60 % of AISI 1212; use rigid setups, carbide tooling and moderate speeds, and finish-machine after final heat treatment to avoid distortion.

Can A182 F11 Cl.2 be welded?

Weldable with matching E/ER 80S-B2 or E8018-B2 consumables; preheat 150–250 °C, interpass control and PWHT at 700–760 °C are essential to avoid hydrogen cracking and hard HAZ.

Can A182 F11 Cl.2 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge at 1050–1200 °C with finish above ~900 °C, then normalize and temper; cold forming is limited and should be followed by stress relief.
