What is P355ML2?
P355ML2 (1.8833) is a thermomechanically rolled fine-grain pressure vessel plate to EN 10028-6 with the stricter L2 toughness class, qualified for service down to -50 °C instead of the -40 °C of ML1. Typical plate properties are 390 MPa yield, 520 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and 155 HB, with a low carbon equivalent that keeps welding straightforward in thicknesses to 100 mm. The TMCP structure does not survive hot forming or normalizing above about 580 °C, and the bare surface needs a coating system. Maximum service temperature is 400 °C; P355ML1 is the cheaper choice when only -40 °C toughness is required. P355ML2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,500°C (2,732 °F). P355ML2 has a yield strength of 390 MPa (56.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 64% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P355ML2
Is P355ML2 easy to machine?
Machines like low-carbon HSLA plate (~55 % of AISI 1212): use positive-rake coated carbide, high feed and coolant to avoid gummy built-up edge.
Can P355ML2 be welded?
Excellent weldability thanks to low CEV; SAW/GMAW/SMAW with low-hydrogen, matching or slightly overmatching Ni-bearing consumables, control heat input and interpass ≤250 °C to preserve −50 °C toughness.
Can P355ML2 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold form/roll freely (A≥22 %); avoid hot forming or normalizing above ~580 °C — it destroys the TMCP structure and the guaranteed properties must then be re-established by heat treatment.
