What is P275NH?
P275NH is a normalized fine-grain non-alloy pressure-vessel steel to EN 10028-3 (1.0487), broadly equivalent in duty to ASTM A516 Grade 60. It is chosen for good low-temperature toughness combined with excellent weldability (CEV typically ≤ 0.40), and is supplied as normalized plate in thickness bands from 16 mm to 250 mm, with N+SR, Z25/Z35 through-thickness and HIC-tested variants. Typical values are 300 MPa yield, 450 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and about 135 HB, with service to 400 °C. The steel has no inherent corrosion resistance and needs paint or galvanizing; specify P275NL1 where guaranteed sub-zero impact energy is required. P275NH has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,490°C (2,714 °F). P275NH has a yield strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 86% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P275NH
Is P275NH easy to machine?
Machines like normalized C-Mn steel (~65 % of AISI 1212); use sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speeds, and expect gummy chips at low S levels.
Can P275NH be welded?
Excellent weldability with CEV typically ≤ 0.40; SAW/SMAW/GMAW with low-hydrogen consumables, preheat 50–100 °C for thick sections, PWHT 550–620 °C when required by EN 13445 / PED.
Can P275NH be formed, bent or molded?
Cold rollable into shells with generous bend radii (≥ 2t for t ≤ 20 mm); hot forming 850–1000 °C followed by re-normalizing to restore fine-grain properties.
