What is P285NH?
P285NH (1.0477) is a normalized non-alloy carbon steel plate to EN 10028-3, supplied in N, NR, N+SR and normalized-forged conditions with guaranteed toughness at ambient and elevated temperature. It is used for pressure vessel and boiler parts at 320 MPa yield, 450 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and about 140 HB (77 HRB), with a weldability rating of 90 that suits heavy welded fabrication. Maximum service temperature is 400 °C and the surface has no corrosion resistance, so a coating and corrosion allowance are needed. P295GH offers higher strength in the same EN 10028 plate family. P285NH has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). P285NH has a yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — weaker than 81% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P285NH
Is P285NH easy to machine?
Machines like normalized 1020/1518 C-Mn steel at roughly 60 % of AISI 1212; use sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speeds and good chip control since the low-carbon structure is gummy.
Can P285NH be welded?
Excellent weldability by SMAW/SAW/GMAW with low-hydrogen consumables matching 285 MPa yield; preheat 100–150 °C for heavy sections and apply PWHT at 560–620 °C where the code requires it.
Can P285NH be formed, bent or molded?
Cold roll and press for shells and heads with generous bend radii (≥2 t); hot forming above ~900 °C should be followed by re-normalizing to restore the fine-grain properties.
