What is P420ML2?

P420ML2 is a thermomechanically rolled pressure vessel steel to EN 10028-6 (1.8828) in the L2 toughness class, delivering 455 MPa yield, 570 MPa tensile, 25 % elongation and 175 HB in the default TM condition with guaranteed impact toughness at very low temperature. It is used for cryogenic and arctic-service vessels, supplied as plate in TM bands to 63 mm plus TM+SR stress-relieved and Z35 through-thickness qualities. Service temperature is limited to 400 °C, the steel needs a protective coating, and hot forming above about 580 °C destroys the TMCP condition. P420M is the choice when low-temperature toughness is not required. P420ML2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). P420ML2 has a yield strength of 455 MPa (66 ksi) and a tensile strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) — stronger than 54% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P420ML2

Is P420ML2 easy to machine?

Machines like a tough HSLA plate at roughly 60 % of AISI 1212 — use rigid setups, positive-rake coated carbide and generous feed to break the stringy chips.

Can P420ML2 be welded?

Excellent weldability thanks to low CEV; use low-hydrogen consumables matched to −50 °C toughness and control heat input (typically ≤ 2.5–3.5 kJ/mm) to protect the TMCP HAZ.

Can P420ML2 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold-forms and rolls well with generous bend radii (≈2–3 t); hot forming above ~580 °C destroys the thermomechanical structure and requires re-qualification.
