What is A182 F2?

ASTM A182 F2 is a low-chromium 0.5Cr-0.5Mo forging steel (UNS K12122) from the A182 pressure-component family, sharing its chemistry with A335 P2 piping. Engineers use it where plain carbon steel loses strength in warm service: normalized and tempered material gives 330 MPa yield, 520 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and about 160 HB (84 HRB), with service to 540 °C in forged flanges, fittings and valve bodies. Chromium is too low for meaningful oxidation or sulfidation resistance, and code welding requires preheat plus PWHT; move to F11 or F22 when higher temperature or creep strength is needed. A182 F2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). A182 F2 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 78% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

What is A182 F2 used for?

Working with A182 F2

Is A182 F2 easy to machine?

Machines like a normalized 4130-class low-alloy steel at ~60 % of 1212; use rigid setups, carbide inserts and moderate speeds — annealed stock gives the best finish.

Can A182 F2 be welded?

P-No.3 material: preheat ~150–200 °C, use E8018-B1/ER80S-B2 (1.25Cr) or matching low-alloy filler, and apply PWHT at 650–700 °C for code work.

Can A182 F2 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge at 1050–1200 °C with finishing above ~900 °C, then normalize and temper; cold forming is limited to gentle bends on annealed material.
