What is P460ML2?

P460ML2 (1.8831) is a thermomechanically rolled fine-grain pressure vessel plate to EN 10028-6; the L2 class guarantees notch toughness down to -50 °C. It is chosen when 500 MPa yield and 600 MPa tensile must combine with cryogenic toughness and good weldability (score 88), and is supplied as plate in TM, TM+SR, Z35 and HIC-tested conditions to 63 mm. Above about 580 °C the TMCP structure is lost, so hot forming, normalizing and high-temperature PWHT are excluded; machinability is moderate (55) and the steel has no inherent corrosion resistance. Maximum service temperature is 400 °C; quenched and tempered P460QL2 is the nearest alternative. P460ML2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,430°C (2,606 °F). P460ML2 has a yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — stronger than 63% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P460ML2

Is P460ML2 easy to machine?

Machines like a 500 MPa-class HSLA plate — rigid setups, coated carbide, moderate speeds; watch for residual-stress distortion when machining flame-cut edges.

Can P460ML2 be welded?

Very good weldability thanks to low carbon equivalent; use low-hydrogen consumables matching 460 MPa class, control heat input and interpass temperature so the fine-grain TM structure and -50 °C toughness are not lost, and keep PWHT below ~580 °C.

Can P460ML2 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formable for shells and heads with generous bend radii (typically ≥2–3 t, transverse to rolling direction); avoid hot forming above ~580 °C or re-normalizing, which destroys the thermomechanically rolled properties.
