What is A182 F24?

ASTM A182 F24 is a vanadium- and titanium-bearing 2.25Cr-1Mo bainitic steel (UNS K30736), matching A335 P24 piping, supplied normalized and tempered, quenched and tempered, or annealed. It was developed for boiler headers that need high creep strength together with weldability that allows thin sections to be joined without PWHT, and delivers 470 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 22 % elongation, about 200 HB (93 HRB) and service to 570 °C. Machinability (score 50) and weldability (score 55) are below plain Cr-Mo grades, weld hardness must be controlled against reheat and stress corrosion cracking, and there is no inherent oxidation resistance. F23 is the closest alternative. A182 F24 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). A182 F24 has a yield strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 57% of steel grades. Working with A182 F24

Is A182 F24 easy to machine?

At about 200 HB in the normalized-and-tempered condition, turn with coated carbide at vc ≈ 120–180 m/min. Vanadium and titanium carbides are mildly abrasive, so use rigid clamping and ample coolant.

Can A182 F24 be welded?

Use GTAW or SMAW with matching T24 consumables, 150–250 °C preheat and interpass at or below 300 °C. Walls of 10 mm or less can be welded without PWHT under a qualified procedure; heavier sections need tempering at 720–750 °C, and weld hardness should be held below about 350 HV to avoid reheat cracking and stress corrosion cracking.

Can A182 F24 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge or hot bend between 1150 and 900 °C and always normalize and temper after forging. Cold bending is limited to small deformations on annealed thin-wall tube.

What surface finishes work on A182 F24?

Cannot be anodized. Water- and flue-gas-side surfaces are protected by paint, sprayed aluminum or diffusion aluminizing, while the steam side relies on a dense oxide film. Shot peening improves fatigue life but must not damage surfaces in creep service.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

Is A182 F24 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (50/100, worse than 53% of steel grades). At about 200 HB in the normalized-and-tempered condition, turn with coated carbide at vc ≈ 120–180 m/min. Vanadium and titanium carbides are mildly abrasive, so use rigid clamping and ample coolant.

Can A182 F24 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (55/100).

What is the maximum service temperature of A182 F24?

A182 F24 is rated for continuous use to about 570°C (1,058 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between A182 F24 N+T and A182 F24-ANN?

N+T is the default condition — pick the standard delivery condition, normalized at 980–1060 °C and tempered above 730 °C, for boiler header, nozzle and valve body forgings needing 470 MPa yield with balanced weldability. ANN: use only as an intermediate condition at 150 HB for rough turning or cold forming; re-normalizing and tempering before service is mandatory to restore creep performance. Yield strength is 470 MPa in N+T versus 330 MPa in ANN.
