What is 13MnNi6-3?
13MnNi6-3 (1.6217) is a fine-grained low-alloy Mn-Ni steel supplied under EN 10028-3 for welded pressure equipment that must stay tough at low temperature. It is chosen for good weldability (score 85) and formability (72) together with 385 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and about 160 HB in the normalized condition; plate is the usual form for shells, drums and dished heads. Service is limited to roughly 350 °C and the steel has no corrosion resistance, so blast-and-paint or lining is required. 15NiMn6 is the alternative when lower design temperatures are needed. 13MnNi6-3 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). 13MnNi6-3 has a yield strength of 385 MPa (55.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 65% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 13MnNi6-3
Is 13MnNi6-3 easy to machine?
Machines like normalized 1.5 % Mn plate steel — moderate cutting speeds, coated carbide, watch for gummy chips in the annealed state.
Can 13MnNi6-3 be welded?
Readily weldable by SMAW/SAW/GMAW with matching low-alloy Ni consumables; use low-hydrogen practice, 100–150 °C preheat on thick sections and control heat input to preserve -60 °C Charpy values.
Can 13MnNi6-3 be formed, bent or molded?
Good hot and cold formability for shells and dished heads; cold-formed strains above roughly 5 % should be followed by normalizing or stress relief to restore toughness.
