What is P355NL2?
P355NL2 is a normalized, fine-grain carbon-manganese pressure vessel plate (1.1106) supplied to EN 10028-3, with guaranteed low-temperature impact testing for sub-zero service. Engineers specify it for welded shells, heads and flanges where toughness at −50 °C is required; default-condition plate gives 385 MPa yield, 550 MPa tensile, 26 % elongation and about 155 HB, with service to 400 °C. Thickness-graded conditions (N t16-35 through N t100-150), N+SR and through-thickness N+Z35 are on file. It has no corrosion resistance of its own and needs coating or cladding; where sub-zero toughness is not required, P355NL1 or P355NH plate is the cheaper choice. P355NL2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). P355NL2 has a yield strength of 385 MPa (55.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) — weaker than 65% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P355NL2
Is P355NL2 easy to machine?
Machines like normalized C-Mn steel (~60 % of AISI 1212): use carbide at 120–180 m/min, generous feed to avoid work-hardened, gummy chips.
Can P355NL2 be welded?
Excellent weldability by SMAW/SAW/GMAW with low-hydrogen basic consumables (e.g. E7018-1 / S2Ni1); preheat 100–150 °C for thick or restrained joints and control heat input to preserve −50 °C HAZ toughness.
Can P355NL2 be formed, bent or molded?
Good cold formability for heads and rolled shells (min bend radius ≈ 2t); after cold forming >5 % strain or any hot forming, re-normalize to restore low-temperature impact properties.
