What is 11MnNi5-3?
11MnNi5-3 (1.6212) is a fine-grain low-alloy manganese-nickel steel for low-temperature service, with nickel added to hold notch toughness down to −60 °C. Engineers use it for structural plate, shells, heads, forgings and seamless tube in +N, +NT and +QT conditions; typical values are 330 MPa yield, 470 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation, 150 HB and service to 350 °C. Its low carbon equivalent gives very good weldability (score 88) and good cold formability (75), but it has no inherent corrosion resistance and must be coated or painted. 11MnNi5-3 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). 11MnNi5-3 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) — weaker than 78% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).
