What is A182 F5a?

ASTM A182 F5a (UNS K42544) is a higher-carbon variant of the 5Cr-0.5Mo forging steel F5, giving increased hardenability and mechanical strength for hot-service components. In the quenched-and-tempered default condition it provides 480 MPa yield, 690 MPa tensile, 24% elongation and about 215 HB (19 HRC), with service to 600 °C, and is stocked in annealed, N+T, Q+T and NACE conditions for flanges and valve bodies. The added carbon lowers machinability (about 48% of AISI 1212) and weldability, with P-No. 5B Group 1 rules requiring 200–300 °C preheat and 705–760 °C PWHT; use standard F5 where weld volume is high. A182 F5a has a density of 7.78 g/cm³ (0.281 lb/in³), lighter than 91% of steel grades. It melts at 1,450°C (2,642 °F). A182 F5a has a yield strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) — stronger than 59% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with A182 F5a

Is A182 F5a easy to machine?

Machines like a medium-hard alloy steel at ~50 % of 1212; use rigid setups, carbide inserts and moderate speeds, and rough in the annealed state where possible.

Can A182 F5a be welded?

P-No.5B Group 1: preheat 200–300 °C, low-hydrogen 5Cr-0.5Mo filler (E8015-B6 / ER80S-B6), maintain interpass and apply PWHT at 705–760 °C.

Can A182 F5a be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge at 1050–1200 °C with slow cooling to avoid quench cracking; cold forming is impractical beyond minor straightening.
