What is P355N?
P355N is a normalized fine-grain non-alloy pressure vessel plate steel to EN 10028-3 (material 1.0562), with counterparts A516 Grade 70, SPV355 and Q345R. Engineers specify it for boiler drums, shells and heat exchangers because normalizing delivers 380 MPa yield, 540 MPa tensile and 26 % elongation at about 160 HB with good notch toughness in weldable plate. Service temperature is capped near 400 °C and the steel has no corrosion resistance, so blasting and coating, cladding or a corrosion allowance is required. Choose P355NH for guaranteed elevated-temperature values or P355NL1 for −40 °C toughness. P355N has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). P355N has a yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — weaker than 68% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 26% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P355N
Is P355N easy to machine?
Machines like ordinary C-Mn plate at ~60 % of AISI 1212; use rigid setups and coolant on drilled nozzle holes, watch for stringy chips at low hardness.
Can P355N be welded?
Excellent weldability with CEV typically ≤0.43; SAW/SMAW/GMAW with low-hydrogen consumables, preheat 100–150 °C for thick sections and PWHT 550–620 °C when required by code.
Can P355N be formed, bent or molded?
Cold-forms readily into heads and shells (min bend radius ~1.5–2 t); hot forming 900–1000 °C must be followed by re-normalizing to restore fine grain and toughness.
