What is P355ML1?

P355ML1 (1.8832) is a thermomechanically rolled low-carbon C-Mn fine-grain pressure vessel plate to EN 10028-6, with L1-level toughness for sub-zero service down to -40 °C. It gives 400 MPa yield, 520 MPa tensile and 28 % elongation with a low carbon equivalent, and is stocked as plate in M, stress-relieved (SR) and Z35 through-thickness conditions to 80 mm. Hot forming or normalizing above about 580 °C destroys the TMCP condition and requires requalification, and the bare surface has no corrosion resistance. Service is limited to 400 °C; use P355ML2 for -50 °C duty or P355QL1 where hot forming is unavoidable. P355ML1 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,460°C (2,660 °F). P355ML1 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P355ML1

Is P355ML1 easy to machine?

Machines like normalized C-Mn plate at ~65 % of AISI 1212; sticky chips, use positive-rake carbide, moderate speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge.

Can P355ML1 be welded?

Excellent weldability with low CEV — SAW/GMAW/SMAW with basic, low-hydrogen consumables matching −40 °C toughness; keep heat input and interpass temperature controlled (typically ≤ 250 °C) so the thermomechanical fine grain and HAZ toughness are preserved.

Can P355ML1 be formed, bent or molded?

Good cold formability for rolling shells and pressing heads; hot forming above ~580 °C or normalizing destroys the TM condition and requires re-qualification (or use of the Q&T grade P355QL1).
