What is P690Q?
P690Q (1.8879) is a quenched-and-tempered nickel-alloy structural and pressure-vessel steel with a 690 MPa minimum yield class, delivered at about 750 MPa yield, 830 MPa tensile, 17 % elongation and 260 HB (25 HRC). It is used where weight has to come out of a welded structure without losing load capacity, and is supplied as plate in QT (by thickness range), QT+SR, QH, QL1 and QL2 conditions. Service is limited to about 400 °C, welding demands low-hydrogen consumables and preheat control, and cold formability is restricted at this strength level. Drop to P500Q where 500 MPa yield is sufficient and fabrication cost matters more. P690Q has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). P690Q has a yield strength of 750 MPa (109 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — stronger than 84% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 17% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with P690Q
Is P690Q easy to machine?
Machine as a 250–290 HB Q&T alloy steel — rigid setups, coated carbide, moderate speeds (~40 % of 1212), and avoid burning the tempered surface layer.
Can P690Q be welded?
Weldable with low-hydrogen processes and matching 690 MPa consumables; preheat typically 100–150 °C (higher for thick/high-CEV heats), interpass ≤200 °C and controlled heat input to protect HAZ toughness.
Can P690Q be formed, bent or molded?
Cold-bend only with generous radii (≈3–4×t transverse) and de-burred, crack-free edges; hot forming above the tempering temperature destroys the Q&T properties and requires re-quench and temper.

What surface finishes work on P690Q?
No natural corrosion resistance — shot-blast to Sa 2.5 and apply zinc-rich primer, metallizing or paint; avoid electroplating that risks hydrogen embrittlement at this strength level.
