What is 1010?

AISI/SAE 1010 is a plain low-carbon (0.08–0.13 % C) mild steel supplied as hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheet/coil, cold-drawn bar and wire. It is chosen for its very high cold formability, excellent weldability and low cost in stampings, brackets, tubing, fasteners and case-hardened parts. Limits are low strength, no through-hardening response, gummy machining behaviour and essentially no corrosion resistance without coating. 1010 has a density of 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). 1010 has a yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 325 MPa (47.1 ksi) — weaker than 99% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1010

Is 1010 easy to machine?

Gummy and prone to built-up edge — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, generous coolant; switch to 1018/12L14 for volume screw-machine work.

Can 1010 be welded?

Excellent by all processes (MIG/TIG/stick/spot/laser) with ER70S-x or E70xx filler; no preheat or PWHT needed at normal sheet and bar thicknesses.

Can 1010 be formed, bent or molded?

Outstanding cold formability — deep drawing, roll forming, bending to near-zero radius and cold heading in the annealed or CR temper.

1010 — frequently asked

What is 1010 used for?

1010 is typically used for welded structural tubing, formed chassis panels, stamped brackets and clips, cold-headed fasteners, wire and nails and carburized pins and bushings. In short: standard soft steel; budget.

What is the yield strength of 1010?

1010 has a typical yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 325 MPa (47.1 ksi) — weaker than 99% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is 1010 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (42/100, worse than 73% of steel grades). Gummy and prone to built-up edge — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, generous coolant; switch to 1018/12L14 for volume screw-machine work.

Can 1010 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (95/100). Excellent by all processes (MIG/TIG/stick/spot/laser) with ER70S-x or E70xx filler; no preheat or PWHT needed at normal sheet and bar thicknesses.

What surface finishes work on 1010?

Can 1010 be formed, bent or molded?

Outstanding cold formability — deep drawing, roll forming, bending to near-zero radius and cold heading in the annealed or CR temper.

What is the maximum service temperature of 1010?

1010 is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 1010-HR and 1010-CD?

HR is the default condition — cheapest general-purpose condition for weldments, brackets and structural stampings where scale and loose tolerances are acceptable. CD: use for turned and screw-machine parts, shafts and cold-headed fasteners needing higher yield and good size tolerance. Yield strength is 180 MPa in HR versus 305 MPa in CD.
