What is 08F?

08F is a rimmed (non-killed) low-carbon sheet steel for simple stampings and cold-formed parts, available cold rolled annealed or full hard, hot rolled, normalized, cold drawn and carburized. It is the economy option where 200 MPa yield, 330 MPa tensile, 36 % elongation and 105 HB (55 HRB) are sufficient, and it cold bends, headers and draws acceptably (formability score 88). Subsurface porosity and segregation from rimmed practice make mirror polishing and decorative plating inconsistent, and strain ageing produces Lueders bands, so aluminium-killed 08Al or DC03 is preferred for demanding drawn panels. 08F has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). 08F has a yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 98% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 36% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 08F

Is 08F easy to machine?

Soft low-carbon steel smears and raises burrs; use sharp high-positive-rake tools, high speed and plenty of coolant. For automatic turning of small parts switch to a free-machining steel such as Y12 or 1215.

Can 08F be welded?

Carbon equivalent is very low, so resistance spot, CO2 gas-shielded MAG, submerged arc and brazing all run without preheat or post-weld heat treatment. Rimmed steel is slightly more porosity-prone, so use a deoxidised wire such as ER70S-6.

Can 08F be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bending, deep drawing and cold heading are good, but strain ageing causes Lueders bands and stretcher strains; skin-pass before stamping and use the material promptly. For demanding deep-drawn parts switch to 08Al or DC03.

What surface finishes work on 08F?

Surface protection is required: zinc or nickel electroplating, phosphating, hot-dip galvanizing, or e-coat plus paint. Subsurface porosity and segregation make mirror polishing and high-decorative plating unreliable.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

How much does 08F cost?

08F is a budget-cost steel ($), cheaper than about 90% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

08F — frequently asked

What is 08F used for?

08F is typically used for simple stampings, enclosures and low-cost sheet metal parts. In short: lowest-cost stamping steel; largely superseded by killed steels; very low carbon equivalent.

What is the yield strength of 08F?

08F has a typical yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 98% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is 08F easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (45/100, worse than 65% of steel grades). Soft low-carbon steel smears and raises burrs; use sharp high-positive-rake tools, high speed and plenty of coolant. For automatic turning of small parts switch to a free-machining steel such as Y12 or 1215.

Can 08F be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (95/100). Carbon equivalent is very low, so resistance spot, CO2 gas-shielded MAG, submerged arc and brazing all run without preheat or post-weld heat treatment. Rimmed steel is slightly more porosity-prone, so use a deoxidised wire such as ER70S-6.

What surface finishes work on 08F?

Can 08F be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bending, deep drawing and cold heading are good, but strain ageing causes Lueders bands and stretcher strains; skin-pass before stamping and use the material promptly. For demanding deep-drawn parts switch to 08Al or DC03.

What is the maximum service temperature of 08F?

08F is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 08F CR-Annealed and 08F-CD?

CR-Annealed is the default condition — use this cold rolled, annealed and skin-passed sheet as the default for general stampings, bends and enclosures, where 36 % elongation and a clean surface matter more than strength. CD: pick cold drawn bar or wire for rivets, pins and cold-headed parts that need tight tolerances, good surface and 450 MPa tensile, accepting elongation reduced to 15 %. Yield strength is 200 MPa in CR-Annealed versus 370 MPa in CD.

How much does 08F cost?
