What is A1011?
A1011 is the ASTM specification for hot-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip, covering commercial quality (CS-A/B/C), drawing quality (DS-A/B), structural quality (SS-30 through SS-80), HSLAS and HSLAS-F 45-80, and UHSS-90 through UHSS-130 in one standard family. It is the lowest-cost widely stocked flat steel for stampings, roll-formed sections and welded fabrication, supplied as coil, sheet and slit strip. The default condition gives 250 MPa yield, 365 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and about 110 HB (62 HRB) with weldability rated 95. Bare surfaces rust and mill scale must be removed before coating; for deep-drawn shapes use cold-rolled DS or DC-grade sheet. A1011 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). A1011 has a yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 365 MPa (52.9 ksi) — weaker than 94% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with A1011
Is A1011 easy to machine?
Cuts easily but is gummy — sharp tools, positive rake and good chip evacuation; deburr and expect mill scale to be abrasive on the first pass.
Can A1011 be welded?
Excellent with GMAW/GTAW/RSW/laser; CS and DS need no preheat, HSLAS and UHSS grades require low-hydrogen consumables and controlled heat input to avoid HAZ softening.
Can A1011 be formed, bent or molded?
CS/DS shear, punch, roll-form and stamp readily; allow larger bend radii and higher springback compensation as you move up SS/HSLAS/UHSS strength levels.
