What is DX51D?

DX51D is the base cold-forming grade of EN 10346 for continuously hot-dip metallic-coated low-carbon steel strip, supplied almost exclusively as coated coil/sheet (+Z galvanized, +ZF galvannealed, +ZA Galfan, +AZ Aluzinc, +AS aluminized). It is chosen for cheap, weldable, paint- or coat-ready sheet with sacrificial zinc protection for ducting, profiles, roofing, cable trays, enclosures and general fabrication. Limits: only bending/simple-forming quality (deeper draws need DX52D–DX56D), no specified yield strength or impact toughness, zinc coating restricts service to roughly 200 °C and complicates welding and post-forming scratch resistance. DX51D has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). DX51D has a yield strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) — weaker than 96% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 32% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with DX51D

Is DX51D easy to machine?

Very easy but gummy; use sharp tools, generous rake and clean punch/die clearance (~6–8 % of thickness) to avoid burrs and zinc pickup — laser and plasma cutting need edge touch-up.

Can DX51D be welded?

Base steel is fully weldable (RSW, MAG, laser); increase current/electrode force for spot welding, expect zinc porosity and spatter in MAG, provide fume extraction and re-protect cut/weld zones with zinc-rich paint.

Can DX51D be formed, bent or molded?

Suited to bending, roll forming, profiling and shallow stampings only (no yield/r-value guarantee); for deep drawing step up to DX52D–DX56D, and use minimum bend radius ≈1×t for +Z, larger for +ZF/+AZ coatings.

Manufacturability

The process limits FabDigit applies to DX51D. Every DX51D part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.

What is the yield strength of DX51D?

DX51D has a typical yield strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) — weaker than 96% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is DX51D easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (65/100, better than 93% of steel grades). Very easy but gummy; use sharp tools, generous rake and clean punch/die clearance (~6–8 % of thickness) to avoid burrs and zinc pickup — laser and plasma cutting need edge touch-up.

Can DX51D be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (92/100). Base steel is fully weldable (RSW, MAG, laser); increase current/electrode force for spot welding, expect zinc porosity and spatter in MAG, provide fume extraction and re-protect cut/weld zones with zinc-rich paint.

What is the maximum service temperature of DX51D?

DX51D is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between DX51D-HR and DX51D S250GD?

HR is the default condition — uncoated hot-rolled/pickled substrate strip, typically 1.5 mm and thicker, before the galvanizing line or where coating is added later. S250GD: order this instead of DX51D when a guaranteed minimum yield (250 MPa) is needed for load-bearing purlins, studs and decking. Yield strength is 240 MPa in HR versus 290 MPa in S250GD.
