What is 1005?
1005 (UNS G10050) is an extra-low-carbon plain steel at about 0.05 % C, the softest and most ductile grade of the low-carbon family. It is specified where cold work rather than strength governs — deep-drawn stampings, cold-headed parts, wire and enamelling sheet — and is stocked as hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheet, coil, wire and bar. In the listed condition it gives 315 MPa yield, 365 MPa tensile, 20 % elongation and 105 HB, so it is not a load-bearing choice; it also has no corrosion resistance and machines gummy (score 45). Move to 1008/1010 or 1018 when more strength is needed. 1005 has a density of 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). 1005 has a yield strength of 315 MPa (45.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 365 MPa (52.9 ksi) — weaker than 82% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1005
Is 1005 easy to machine?
Gummy and low-strength: use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, generous coolant and chip breakers; expect built-up edge and poor finish in the annealed state — cold-drawn stock machines noticeably better.
Can 1005 be welded?
Excellent by all processes (RSW, MIG, TIG, laser, oxyfuel) with no preheat or PWHT; use ER70S-3/-6 filler and control weld-metal deoxidation on rimmed/unkilled sheet.
Can 1005 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability — deep drawing, stretch forming, roll forming, cold heading and bending to ~0.5t radii; watch for stretcher strain (Lüders) marks on non-temper-rolled sheet.
1005 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.

What surface finishes work on 1005?
Not anodizable; protect by zinc plating, hot-dip galvanizing, phosphate + oil, e-coat or powder paint. Takes plating and paint readily but rusts within hours bare in humid air.
