What is A1008?
ASTM A1008 is the US specification for cold-rolled carbon steel sheet, covering commercial (CS), drawing (DS, DDS, EDDS), structural (SS 25–80), high-strength low-alloy (HSLAS, HSLAS-F), bake-hardenable (BHS 180–280) and UHSS designations; it is the American counterpart to SPCC/DC01. Engineers order it as coil, sheet and blanks and select the quality level by draw severity or required yield, with 240 MPa yield, 330 MPa tensile and 38 % elongation typical of the default condition. Bare sheet has no corrosion resistance, and the higher SS/HSLAS/UHSS grades trade formability for strength. Use A1011 hot-rolled sheet where cold-rolled surface and gauge tolerance are not needed. A1008 has a density of 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 92% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). A1008 has a yield strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 96% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 38% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with A1008
Is A1008 easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — sharp tools, positive rake and good chip evacuation; blanking, laser and punching are the normal 'machining' routes for this thin sheet.
Can A1008 be welded?
Excellent for RSW, MIG, TIG and laser with ER70S-x filler; no preheat or PWHT needed on CS/DS/DDS, but UHSS and high HSLAS grades need controlled heat input to limit HAZ softening.
Can A1008 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forming is the primary process — pick CS for bends, DS/DDS/EDDS as draw severity rises; watch stretcher strains/aging in non-killed CS and allow for springback in SS/HSLAS grades.
