What is S15C?

S15C is a Japanese plain low-carbon machine-structural steel (≤0.25 % C, nominally about 0.15 % C) essentially equivalent to SAE 1015. It is used for lightly stressed machine parts and for carburized components, and is available hot-rolled, annealed, normalized and cold-drawn as bar, plate and strip. Hot-rolled properties are 260 MPa yield, 420 MPa tensile and 30 % elongation at 121 HB, with a formability score of 90 and excellent weldability at CEV ≈ 0.25. Strength is low and the steel will not through-harden, so case harden wear surfaces or step up to S25C when more core strength is required. S15C has a density of 7.86 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 90% of steel grades. It melts at 1,490°C (2,714 °F). S15C has a yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) — weaker than 92% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with S15C

Is S15C easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use sharp positive-rake tools, high surface speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge; normalize or cold draw first for better finish, or switch to a resulfurized grade for screw-machine work.

Can S15C be welded?

Excellent weldability by all arc, resistance and gas processes; CEV ≈ 0.25 so no preheat or PWHT is needed except on very heavy sections.

Can S15C be formed, bent or molded?

Very good cold formability — suitable for deep drawing, bending to tight radii and cold heading; hot forge at 1100–1250 °C and normalize afterwards.

No anodizing; protect with zinc/zinc-nickel plating, phosphate + oil, black oxide or paint. Takes a fair polish but soft surface scratches easily unless case hardened.

Can S15C be formed, bent or molded?

Very good cold formability — suitable for deep drawing, bending to tight radii and cold heading; hot forge at 1100–1250 °C and normalize afterwards.

What is the maximum service temperature of S15C?

S15C is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between S15C-N and S15C-CD?
