What is SPHE?
SPHE is the deep-drawing grade of JIS G 3131 hot-rolled low-carbon sheet and strip (SPHC commercial, SPHD drawing, SPHE deep drawing); low carbon and manganese with tight phosphorus and sulfur limits give low yield strength and high elongation. It is used for stampings that need large deformation and is stocked hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized. Limits are low strength (tensile about 270–380 MPa), no heat-treatable strengthening and poor bare corrosion resistance, so it ships pickled and oiled or coated. SPHD or SPHC suit shallower draws. SPHE has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). SPHE has a yield strength of 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) — weaker than 98% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 42% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with SPHE
Is SPHE easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — use sharp positive-rake tooling, high speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and burrs; drilling and punching are easy.
Can SPHE be welded?
Excellent for RSW, MIG, TIG, laser and projection welding with no preheat (CE ≈ 0.10–0.15); remove zinc coating fumes/ventilate on galvanized material.
Can SPHE be formed, bent or molded?
Deep-drawing grade: high n and r values allow multi-stage draws, tight-radius bends and hydroforming; guard against stretcher strains by skin-pass or timely forming.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to SPHE. Every SPHE part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
