What is C10C?
C10C is a low-carbon non-alloy steel of about 0.07–0.13 % C to EN 10263 (1.0214, equivalent to Ck10, 1010 and 10), produced specifically for cold heading and cold extrusion. Its ductility takes severe multi-blow upsetting, and it is stocked as wire, rod and coil for fastener manufacture, with roughly 400 MPa yield, 470 MPa tensile, 12 % elongation, 140 HB and 76 HRB in the cold-worked default state. Machinability is modest (score 50) and the bare surface has no corrosion resistance, so plating or phosphating is required. C15C is the usual choice when more strength is needed after forming. C10C has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). C10C has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi).

Working with C10C
Is C10C easy to machine?
Soft and gummy — expect stringy chips and built-up edge; use sharp positive-rake tooling, high speed and generous coolant, or specify a resulfurized grade if turning dominates.
Can C10C be welded?
Excellent weldability by all arc, resistance and projection processes; carbon equivalent ~0.20 so no preheat or PWHT needed in normal sections.
Can C10C be formed, bent or molded?
Designed for severe multi-blow cold heading and cold extrusion; use +AC or +AC+C with phosphate/soap or polymer lubricant for high upset ratios, and consider intermediate stress-relief for heavy reductions.

What surface finishes work on C10C?
No corrosion resistance in the bare state — zinc or zinc-nickel electroplate (with baking against hydrogen embrittlement), hot-dip galvanize, mechanical zinc, or phosphate-and-oil; takes paint and plating readily.
