What is DX53D?

DX53D is a soft, low-carbon, aluminium-killed flat steel defined in EN 10346 for continuously hot-dip coated strip intended for cold forming; the '53' grade sits between DX52D and DX54D in drawability, offering guaranteed A80 ≥ 30 % with a low, capped yield strength. It is chosen for deep-drawn or roll-formed galvanized parts — appliance housings, HVAC ducting, automotive underbody brackets, cable trays, purlins and profiles — where corrosion protection plus good drawing behaviour matter more than strength. Limits are its very modest strength (no structural load rating like S250GD), zinc-coating service temperature (~200 °C), fume/spatter issues when welding through the coating, and no guaranteed r-value/n-value unless specially ordered. DX53D has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,495°C (2,723 °F). DX53D has a yield strength of 220 MPa (31.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) — weaker than 98% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 33% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

  • Deep-drawn appliance housings
  • HVAC ducting and plenums
  • Cable trays and trunking

  • Electrical enclosures and cabinets

Advantages

  • Conducts heat well — 52 W/m·K (30 BTU/hr·ft·°F), better than 98% of steel grades

Chemical Resistance SummaryZinc coating gives good atmospheric and mild-alkaline protection with sacrificial cut-edge action; attacked by acids, strong alkalis, chlorides in standing water and by prolonged wet storage (white rust). Bare or cut surfaces rust freely; not for immersion service.

Working with DX53D

Is DX53D easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed and low feed on blanked or punched sheet; deburr edges since cut edges lose coating.

Can DX53D be welded?

Excellent resistance spot/seam and MAG weldability, but extract zinc fumes, raise current ~10–20 % versus bare steel and expect porosity/spatter; touch up welds with zinc-rich paint.

Can DX53D be formed, bent or molded?

Drawing-quality: suits deep drawing, stretch forming and tight roll-formed profiles; order skin-passed non-ageing material and use zinc-friendly lubricant to avoid galling and powdering.

Manufacturability

The process limits FabDigit applies to DX53D. Every DX53D part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.

What surface finishes work on DX53D?

Not anodizable — phosphate/chromate-free passivate then powder-coat or coil-coat; oiled or passivated coils must be kept dry to avoid white rust.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

How much does DX53D cost?

DX53D is a standard-cost steel ($$), cheaper than about 71% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Can DX53D be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (90/100). Excellent resistance spot/seam and MAG weldability, but extract zinc fumes, raise current ~10–20 % versus bare steel and expect porosity/spatter; touch up welds with zinc-rich paint.

What surface finishes work on DX53D?

Can DX53D be formed, bent or molded?

Drawing-quality: suits deep drawing, stretch forming and tight roll-formed profiles; order skin-passed non-ageing material and use zinc-friendly lubricant to avoid galling and powdering.

What is the maximum service temperature of DX53D?

DX53D is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between DX53D-HR and DX53D-CR?

HR is the default condition — hot-rolled pickled base used for the heavier gauges of DX53D coated strip; slightly lower ductility and rougher surface than CR. CR: uncoated cold-rolled full-finish base metal; pick when the part is painted or coated after forming, or for inland/indoor use. Yield strength is 220 MPa in HR versus 190 MPa in CR.
